Lieutenant Colonel Browne receives National Award |

![]() Commandant of the Barbados Cadet Corps, Lt Col T. T. Browne was awarded the Silver Crown of Merit at this year's Independence honours by Governor General, Sir Clifford Husbands at a classy ceremony held at Government House on Wednesday November 30, 2005. Col Browne was one of four persons receiving this prestigious award. He was awarded for his contributions to community service over the past three decades. In addition to his work with the Cadet Corps, Col Browne has made significant contributions in the areas of Credit Unions, Sports, Engineering and Management. Lt. Col Trevor T Browne has been making contributions at the highest level as a volunteer in a number of areas of community, sports and professional life in Barbados and the Caribbean for some decades now. Col Browne is now well known and respected as an effective leader and pioneer in a wide range of disciplines and has contributed immeasurably to his various communities. Browne is an Electrical Engineer by profession, graduating with upper second-class honours from UWI St Augustine in 1976. He was employed at the Barbados Light and Power Company as a trainee engineer and has since risen to the post of Chief Administrative Officer at that Company. He has been a member of the BL&P executive staff since 1984. CooperativesIn 1980, he was instrumental in launching the Reddy Kilowatt Cooperative Society and in 1984, the Light and Power Employees Co-operative Credit Union Limited. Browne remained as president of these bodies until 1994, at which time, the Credit Union employed a staff of over 30 persons and accumulated over two million dollars in assets. In 2005, the assets of the Credit Union stand at twenty Million dollars. $20 Million. Credit Union League and InsuranceIn 1989, Browne was elected to the post of President of the Barbados Cooperative Credit Union League, and was reelected annually until 1994. During that period, the BCCUL underwent a major change in focus and saw the creation of Co-operators General Insurance Company Limited. Browne was the driving force behind the creation of this insurance Company, which has gone on to become one of the leading General Insurance Companies in Barbados. He served as Chairman from the initial conception of the idea until the third year of operation when he resigned to spent more time with his new interest, the Barbados Cadet Corps. Cadets - Military In 1993, Browne was appointed to the rank of Major and posted as South Zone Commander in the Barbados Cadet Corps. He has been a senior cadet while at Combermere School and assistant Company Commander while a member of Staff at the school in 1973. Browne also served in the Barbados Regiment and Barbados Defence Force from 1978 to 1982. In 1999, Browne led in the conceptualization of a strategic development plan for the Cadet Corps that outlines the development of the organisation well into the 21st century. In 2004, Browne was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commandant of the Cadet Corps. Total Quality ManagementIn 1990, Browne was appointed to the post of Quality Administrator and project leader for a management reform project the Barbados Light and Power Company called Total Quality Management. He soon developed a reputation as an expert in this area and in 1993, Colonel Browne was elected to the position of President of the Barbados Association for Total Quality, an organisation put together by a number of leading companies in Barbados. The BATQ was intended to change the style of management in Barbados to a more modern and enlightened approach that was intended to improve productivity, competitiveness and efficiency. Browne was a leader in this area and did numerous training seminars, lectures and other promotions locally and regionally, in supporting the quality drive. Table Tennis Local & Regional In 1999, Col. Browne was elected president of the Barbados Table Tennis Association. He served in this capacity until 2005. During this period, Col Browne brought his usual style and approach to this sport, which has undergone a major upgrade in profile. In fact, in 2000, Colonel Browne was elected to the position of President of the Caribbean Table Tennis Federation, which comprises some 32 countries from the English, French Spanish and Dutch Caribbean and South America. Browne was reelected to this position annually until 2004. Barbados Olympic Association -SportsIn 2004, Colonel Browne was elected to the Board of the Barbados Olympic Association for a four-year term leading up to the 2008 Olympics in Bejin, China. Browne serves on a number of subcommittees of the BOA, including the Building Committee and Awards Committee. Engineering A qualified professional engineer since 1981, Col Browne is the current president of the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers (BAPE) and a council member of the Council of Caribbean Engineering Organisations. (CCEO). He has been a member of staff of the Barbados Light and Power Company Limited for the past 29 years. In the above areas, Colonel Browne not only rose to national and regional prominence, but made all these contributions on a voluntary basis. Additionally, in each area, he has gained a reputation of always being punctual, honest reliable, effective and hardworking. Colonel Browne is a natural leader who is self confident, determined and focused and he has the ability to inspire others to aspire to an identified vision. The Government of Barbados has accordingly awarded the Silver Crown of Merit to Col Browne in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community.
