Camp Olympia 002

From Monday August 13th  to Monday 20th some 30 junior national athletes, representing such sports as Netball, Hockey, Athletics, Cricket and other sports attended Camp Olympia 002 at the Cadet Corp's campsite, Paragon. The camp is sponsored by the Barbados Olympic Association and Olympic Solidarity and conducted by the Barbados cadet Corps. This is the second in a series of planned camps designed to prepare potential athletes for the challenges of international competition. Participants were exposed to various character building exercises, lectures and other sessions which were designed to build self confidence, knowledge, and character.
Course director, Lt Michael Boyce was assisted by Mr Jasper Blades of the National Sports Council, 2Lt Dreana Marshall, Midshipman Tyrone Edwards, and Officer Cadet J. Pinder of the Corps. A number of senior cadets also performed roles as Course Assistants - including CUO Faith Alleyne, Ensign A Kellman SSgt N Gibson, Cpl Blunte P, Cpl Charlery N and LS  Stuart R. Olympia 001 Graduate Kyle Maxwell also acted as a course assistant.

The course was not easy for the participants, but there were few complaints as everyone appreciated the overall intent. Camp Commandant, Lt Boyce expressed much satisfaction with the progress made by the athletes during the camp.

There were classes - outdoors, indoors, in tents and everywhere

Preparing for the hike    Athletes are briefed at Cherry Tree Hill

Nice smile -but just a bit scared ??   If officers looked a bit tired - they did work very hard..

Enjoying the scenery en route...   ...and learning a lot too

Maj Boyce knows EVERYTHING about this area   ...and it is an interesting area

passing Morgan Lewis   Admiring Mr. 'Lowdown' Hoad's farm

Settling in for the night... How do we light this fire???   Officers found some challenges to test leadership skills

This one appeared to be impossible?!?   The MUST be a way to light this fire...

All hands on deck to prepare supper... after officers assisted in getting the fire going..

Cooks were very enthusiastic - if largely inexperienced.   But ALL reports were complimentary...at least taste

Next morning after an early breakfast it was time to clean up    ...and we REALLY mean clean

and to pack up   and plan the route for the next leg

All ready to move ...Mr. Blades had some tight deadlines..   so it is off towards Barclays Park

the pace was brisk...   and it was not all on the road

this slowed things down a bit - but was worth every second   The BDF PSIs were full of encouragement

and set a hot pace...   But the athletes were up to it.

Eventually - there at last.   Time to relax and enjoy the place???

Not likely. With Mr. Boyce and Blades around?? warm down exercise time   You serious? Impromptu talks? NOW? HERE? with the noisy waves in the background?

"Perfect setting" says Mr. Blades -consider the noise as the crowd cheering your win... now talk to the press...   There were clear improvements shown...

In fact this athlete got a bit carried away in outlining what he would do if he was Minister of Sport for a day....   The Drill competition was done by elimination. When you make an error - you are OUT - last person standing on the parade square wins.

It was quite exciting-and the officers were very attentive.   so were the growing squad of "ejectees"...

These athletes are really good -considering the limited training they had been exposed to..
another one bites the dust....   And the Champion - The Drill Queen...Shanise Jarvis

The athletes put on a concert for the parents and family who visited on Sunday afternoon...   The highlight was the modeling of their formal wear. (The planned dinner was postponed due to Hurricane Dean.)

Co-MC and top model - Henry...   A beautiful girl on each arm?... no wonder everyone wants to be an athlete

The ladies were all beautiful and elegant in their outfits...   She is not only an athlete - but a model too..

The show- stopper   Senior student Tracy was pure class

Camp Olympia 002 was a great success -despite the interruption of Hurricane Dean. It is clear that this experience is good for the potential athletes and that as many of our future sports heroes as is possible should be exposed to such training.

The Barbados Cadet Corps is happy to be associated with such a scheme and we look forward to enjoying the future success of these talented young athletes.

The parents and family enjoyed the show...
