OH -What an evening of

Love and Music

It was indeed an evening of love and music, and style and quality and goose pimples as the Barbados Cadet Corps' Band put on it first full concert at the Dove Convention Center.

A moderate audience that included both Permanent Secretaries from the Prime Minister's office, the Chief of Staff of the Defence Force, the directors of the Royal Barbados Police Band and the Barbados Defence Force band, numerous parents and guardians, family and friends , officers and well wishers and members of the general public was in attendance.

Under the energetic direction of Lt Len Cummins, the band masterfully demonstrated its versatility and skill with a variety of love selections, gospel tunes, classics and old familiar hits from the Beatles and Carpenters. Of course they also played their silver and gold award winning pieces 'Bach meets rock' and 'Wind beneath my wings' respectively.

If these children who are selected from across all our schools and community colleges are representative of the general school population in Barbados, then maybe the challenge that we face as a country is our ability - as adults- to harness the obvious talents, enthusiasm, intelligence, energy and willingness to work hard, that these children exhibit. Or maybe after one hundred years the Barbados Cadet Corps have been able to develop the correct approach to working to bring out the best in Barbadian children??.

Sharing the stage with the cadet band were a number of former cadets and a current officer. These supporting acts were extremely well received by the audience and would have been clear inspirations to the present cadets of where they can and will go in a few years time.

Mya Daniel, Samuel Millington, Lt Naomi Williams, Suneta Brooker, Rev Mark Harewood, Danielle Gibson and Fiona Gaskin, and former cadet band director Pernell Farley all thrilled the audience- and the cadet band - with their performances.

In true military style, the show started promptly on time at 6.00 p.m. and, under the professional guidance of Lt Michael Jules, ran like clockwork for the duration. A special presentation was made to Capt C Corbin and his wife who celebrates their wedding anniversary on valentines day. A number of draws were made for door prizes and one such prize was won by SSgt 'Ginger' Waithe, a long time associate, trainer, instructor, friend and reliable supporter of the Cadet Corps.

Congratulations to all concerned - keep up the good work, and a special thanks to all those who took the time, effort and money to support the cadets in their first public concert. A real special thank you to the special guest who came to support and encourage the children and whose remarks and encouragement are especially appreciated by the cadets and officers.
