MAY DAY 2006

The ceremony was first held last year 2005

The Cadet Band brought a sustained series of performances to an end today with a sterling performance at Barbados Workers Union May Day Street Parade on 1 May 2006.. The members of the Band, resplendent in their Toy Soldier uniforms once again had the honour of marching at the head of the parade.

Before being involved in the march, however, they assembled at the memorial for Sir Frank Walcott where there was a brief but very moving ceremony in honour of the contribution made by Sir Frank to the BWU.

The Band was formed up at the right of the statue and four members of the Girl Guides and Boys Scouts Association were in place with wreaths to present to the main dignitaries. The parade which left the Garrison Savannah made a brief stop at the memorial and Lady Walcott, Sir Roy Trotman Minister Prescod and the head of the Private Sector Organizations moved towards the memorial.

The Prayers were said by Dean Canon Frank Marshall and this was followed by the laying of four wreaths by the dignitaries mentioned. During the laying of the wreaths, the Cadet band played' The Lords' My Shepherd". It was beautifully rendered.

The ceremony was first held last year 2005 on May Day. This year a special touch was added to it when members of each of the participating groups also laid a red rose at the foot of the statue. For historical purposes it is important to note that for the past two years this ceremony has been designed and coordinated by Maj Patrick Skeete, CEO of the Barbados Cadet Corps in association with Mr "Gabby" Scott and the management of the BWU. This is another important way in which the Cadet Corps has made a meaningful contribution to a local ceremony and touched Barbadians in a significant way.

The General Secretary of the BWU expressed great pleasure with the ceremony and with the professionalism of the Band at the head of the parade. The BWU and the Cadet Corps share a special partnership which is mutually beneficial and the Band delivered a performance to ensure a splendid start to the celebrations!.
