COMMANDANT WANTS FIVE THOUSAND

5000

That is the magic number that has been bandied about by Commandant of the Barbados Cadet Corps Lt Col Trevor Browne ever since taking office eighteen months ago.

Colonel Browne clearly believes, and has been trying to convince anyone willing (or required) to listen, that this is the number of cadets that should constitute the Barbados Cadet Corps come the year 2010.

It appears that many others in the Corps are beginning to accept this position and are working to realize this goal.

A number of initiatives that have been instituted have already begun to bear fruit.

The Junior Cadet Program which has been implemented with the assistance of the Ministry of Education has been particularly successful with hundreds of juniors who previously would have been unable to participate, becoming involved.

The launch of the Specialized Band and Sea Cadet Programs have also positively impacted the numbers.

By October 2005, total numbers were at 1354, up from approximately 600 just two years ago.

A number of new initiatives are planned to further enhance the attractiveness of the Corps to school children and also to parents, teachers and the general public.
