An excellent turnout of senior officers completed a one week training program in Disaster Preparedness with a clear focus on a role for the Barbados Cadet Corps in such a scenario. The course was facilitated by Mr. Gentles of CDERA and various aspects were presented by representatives of CERO and the BDF.

The exercise represented the first step in refining the role to be played by the Cadet Corps in the event of a national disaster. The officers clearly enjoyed the exercise even though is was described as 'hectic'. During the exercise, the Officers developed various proposals for a new role for the Cadet Corps and identified a number of requirements, opportunities and concerns.

A whole new training program will now need to be instituted in order to properly prepare the Cadet Corps for this important role. Even more interesting is the regional approach being adopted by Cadets to disaster management as this lends itself to inter-regional co-operation.

During this year's Summer Camps, cadets from Barbados, St Lucia, Dominica, St Vincent and Antigua will co-operate in joint training and in various exercises to prepare themselves to take on this regional role.

Chief of Staff of the BDF Col A Quintyne as well as Commandant of the BCC Lt Col Browne visited the course to observe the officers and to offer encouragement and support.
